Rhetorical help wanted

symphy is one of exactly two smart conservative friends I have, the only one with an LJ, and it constantly bugs the crap out of me that I am not a good enough debater to get into a decent argument with him.
I don't think I will ever understand how two equally smart, equally well-educated people can look at the same event, say last night's debate, and come away with such vastly different perspectives about what was said.
