For
raptorgirl: The Gnome Does Ann Arbor!
Jun. 21st, 2004 12:59 pmI took these pics weeks ago. Sorry it's taken me so long to toss 'em up here...
Here're the results of Mr. Rumbottom's visit to the campus of the University of Michigan:

This is Angell Hall, the biggest academic building on campus and the home of the English Department. As you can probably imagine, I've spent a lot of time there.

Angell Hall again--this time from the ubiquitous Let's Take an Arty Picture of Angell Hall angle you see in all the pretty guides you get for Campus Day and Orientation and whatnot.

This is the big 'M' out on the Diag (the Diag being, for the non-Michiganders out there, the big stretch of grass and sidewalk that connects most of the major academic buildings with one another). There's some legend about how you can't step on the 'M' until you've taken your first bluebook exam, or you'll fail it--Mr. Rumbottom looks just as baffled by this as I am.

Here's Mr. Rumbottom chillin' by the historic and picturesque Michigan Union, at which I have eaten copious amounts of junk food and taken many a nap in lieu of studying.

The gnome is dwarfed (haha, get it? DWARFED!) by the Michigan Union sign.

Here we see Mr. Rumbottom hanging out in his natural habitat--a garden. Doesn't he look happy here?

The gnome is exploring my current place of employment, the Graduate Library.

I had to stand poor Mr. Rumbottom in a trash can in order to get a decent view of both him and Hill Auditorium. How humiliating!

It took me forever to get a decent image of this. The cube, as you can probably tell by comparing it to the people walking past it, is gigantic. The gnome is not. This made for a problem. Finally a little girl who had noticed my project suggested standing him on a little concrete post thing some distance away from the cube, which I did, and it worked perfectly. So hurray for little girls. Oh yeah, and you can't tell from this picture, but the coolest thing about the Cube is that you can spin it around. I passed the Cube every day on my way to and from class, and towards the beginning of the year I'd spin it every time I walked past.
<img src="http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mesander/pics/gnomepics/gnomebench.jpg" alt="A place to rest your ass, curtesy of the Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity of 1899">
Finally, after a long day of picture taking and sight-seeing, the gnome rests for a time on the historic Dental Fraternity Bench. Believe it or not, it's just as ugly in person.
