There's something about this weekend and good timing. Despite having left almost 15 minutes later than planned yesterday, not to mention wasting a good 10 minutes driving to the wrong freeway (I always autopilot for M-14 since that takes me just about anywhere I need to go, but of course the airport's off of I-94, silly nervous girl), I made it to Baggage Claim not five minutes after [livejournal.com profile] grrwoo debarked. Despite my universally-recognized shitty sense of direction and [livejournal.com profile] grrwoo's complete unfamiliarity with Michigan, we made it to the hotel ridiculously easily.

All of which is to say that come time to meet Neil, of course we got seats in the front row, and of course everyone decided to line up in order of row. I think we were something like the 6th or 7th people to get to talk to him.

Shockingly, I didn't go into stuttery fangirl mode, as I generally do with authors I really respect. Maybe it's because he was so damn friendly-- "Oh," he said, as we whipped out [livejournal.com profile] raptorgirl's gnome, "you have a gnome!" as if that were the most delightful thing to happen to him all day. Perhaps it was. Anyway, he cheerfully signed my beat-to shit thesis copy of Coraline ("The most post-ited copy in the world!"), my already Terry Pratchett-ified copy of Good Omens, and another copy of Coraline for my advisor (sorry, [livejournal.com profile] echo_eriol, there was, as I feared, a 3-item limit, but I tried. I even grabbed my copy of Neverwhere for you. Oh well, I'll just have to come up with another birthday present).

For those of you not in the know, [livejournal.com profile] raptorgirl has a brilliant Amelie-esque mission to take this borrowed garden gnome around the country and photograph it in various interesting places and with various interesting people before eventually returning it to its owners, scrapbook in tow. I think it's just about the best idea ever.

These pics can also be found over on [livejournal.com profile] grrwoo's LJ, but here are the gnome/Neil pics for your viewing pleasure:

The borrowed gnome thing has been done to death. It began when I was just a young kid in the late 70's and it happened to a neighbor of my grandfathers...or not, as I have since heard it is also an urban legend.

There are also some scenes on that very topic (gnomes and thier interesting journey's) here:
