1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?
Graduated from college. Had sex. Wrote the longest single document I've ever written (58 pages).
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't make New Year's resolutions.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.
5. What countries did you visit?
Canada. Also, I kind of secretly think that Manhattan should be its own country.
6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?
A real, grown-up job with a salary and benefits.
7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
March 12: Turned in thesis. May 1: Graduated from college. August 10: Started dating B.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

9. What was your biggest failure?
Spent way too much time flipping out over my thesis. As a result, got the worst grades I've ever gotten my last semester of college.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing major--got pretty bad colds a few times, fell over and whapped my head on some pavement, sprained my ankle.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
My iPod. It is my precious.
12. Where did most of your money go?
Rent.
13. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The whole boyfriend thing. Graduation. The Wilco concert. Both trips to NY.
14. What song will always remind you of 2004?
Anything by The Decemberists, The Shins - New Slang, Rilo Kiley - A Better Son/Daughter
15. Compared to this time last year, are you:
Happier or sadder?
Much, much happier.
Thinner or fatter?
About the same.
16. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Going to class, actually. Weird, but true. Traveling.
17. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Flipping out over unimportant things. Watching mindless television. Feeling sorry for myself.
18. How will you be spending Christmas?
With my mom, at my aunt and uncle's house. I missed my family's Thanksgiving this year, so I promised I'd be home for Christmas.
19. Did you fall in love in 2004?
Yes.
20. What was your favorite TV program?
The Daily Show. Lost.
21. What was the best book you read?
Oh man, so many good ones. Bee Season - Myla Goldberg. Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World - Haruki Murakami. Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace (not necessarily the *best* book I read this year, but certainly my biggest literary achievement).
22. What were your favorite films of this year?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, The Incredibles. I have extremely high hopes for The Life Aquatic.
23. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Got yummy vegetarian lunch with Haley, bought Monkey Shoes, went over to B.'s house and unearthed a book buried in my birthday cake. I turned 23.
24. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?
Haley's castoffs + thrift store chic + Melanie's own twist = Hipster Lite.
25. What kept you sane?
Haley, Aubrey, Brooks, Mario Kart, my sense of humor, Ben & Jerry's.
26. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Jon Stewart, Barack Obama.
27. What political issue stirred you the most?
The damn reelection.
28. Who did you miss?
All my friends who are now scattered around the country.

Brooks.

Sometimes, all you can do is laugh.
